Office 2007 has arrived.  Please click on any of the links below for information regarding features, compatibility, training or tech support.

Intro to the Office 2007 Features

1. New look and feel

Office 2007 introduces the Office Button – which replaces the File menu – as well as a tabbed toolbar interface known as the Ribbon.

2. Live Preview

With the new Live Preview feature, Office 2007 temporarily applies formatting by simply placing the mouse cursor over any formatting button, such as a font.

3. Blog authoring

Using Microsoft Word 2007’s new blog posting feature, you can create blog posts and post them directly to your blog without opening a web browser.

4. XML-based file format

Office 2007 introduces new file formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, known as the Office Open XML formats. These formats offer reduced file sizes and improved data recovery. However, they are incompatible with older versions of Office unless a plug-in is installed. For situations in which the recipient of a file may not have Office 2007, it is recommended that you save the file in compatibility mode (Office 97-2003).

5. New default font

Times New Roman has been replaced with Calibri, a sans serif font, as the default font in Microsoft Office.

6. Improved charts and graphics

Charts created in Office 2007 are capable of a more professional, realistic look than past versions have offered.

Office 2007 Compatibility

While Office 2003 and Office 2007 are similar, you might find some compatibility issues when you try to open a 2007 document with the 2003 version of Office. A compatibility pack has been installed on all campus machines, which will allow you to read any file, created in Office 2007, but might affect formatting if you view an Office 2007 document using Office 2003.

You will have the ability to save files created in Office 2007 in a way that makes them compatible with earlier versions of Office. To make a 2007 document compatible with earlier versions, click on the Office Button  ‘Save’ then choose the ‘Word 97-2003’ option under ‘Save as type’ (see example below).
