Network File Storage

Information Technology (IT) allows all university students, faculty and staff to store data on the campus network. This includes personal data storage and Web pages as well as official Missouri S&T data produced in the course of a day's work.

General Information:

Network storage falls into the following broad categories:

  1. Individual User Account
    • User accounts are created for all students, faculty, and staff members for personal use. All usage of an individual user account must be in accordance with UM Acceptable Use Policy  and Missouri S&T Acceptable Use Policy as well as state and federal law.
    • User accounts should only be used by the "owner" of the account--the individual that was originally granted permission to use the account. User accounts should not be shared by more than one owner. Ownership of a user account is non-transferrable.
    • Standard User Account size is 500 MB. If more space is required, please contact IT Help Desk at 573-341-HELP or submit an online Help Request.

  2. Individual Web Site Account
    • Personal Web space is provided to students, faculty and staff members as a benefit to the campus community.
    • Personal Web sites are not official university Web sites and should not be used to represent the official policy of Missouri S&T or UM-System.
    • Personal Web sites should not be used for official university organizations, departments, or research groups. If such Web space is needed, submit an online Help Request.
    • All personal Web sites must be in accordance with UM-System's and Missouri S&T's Acceptable Use Policies as well as state and federal law.
    • Standard personal Web site storage size is 50 MB.

  3. Departmental Network Storage (a.k.a. "Department Volume")
    • Department volumes are primarily used for sharing files between members of official university departments, offices, and organizations.

  4. Research Network Storage (a.k.a. “Research Volume?)
    • Research volumes are intended to be used for housing research data, including student use.
    • Research volumes require a faculty or staff sponsor and a owning Department or Center.
    • Research volumes are organized under Departments and Centers.
    • To request a research volume, contact the IT Help Desk.

All data stored on the campus is redundantly stored and is routinely backed up at least once a day.
