formerly University of Missouri-Rolla

Information Technology has teamed up with the makers of McAfee to provide FREE Antivirus Software to all students, faculty, and staff who use their computers to connect to the university network. This is part of an ongoing effort to provide a secure network environment to the Campus Community.

Your McAfee license only applies as long as you are affiliated with the University, either as a student, faculty, or staff member. Once you dissolve that affiliation, please remove the McAfee antivirus software from your machine.

Caution: McAfee is apparently incompatible with systems that are also running Norton antivirus software. You may need to uninstall Norton before installing McAfee. IT does not support or distribute Norton Antivirus, but if you have it installed on your machine and need updated virus definitions, please go to the following link:

Installing McAfee Antivirus

Please select the category for the operating system on your computer:

Windows 95, 98 or ME

Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Vista

Note: If your already have a previous version of McAfee installed, you will need to uninstall the previous version, install one of the new versions below, and then reboot your machine.

  Macintosh OS X

Additional Downloads:

  • McAfee Stinger Virus Removal Tool -- Removes already existing viruses on an infected machine. However, you will still need to ensure your machine has all the latest patches from Microsoft (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com). Otherwise you run the risk of becoming reinfected as soon as you try to connect to the network again.
  • Mcafee VirusScan SDAT Updated Definitions -- Keep your VirusScan engine and virus definitions up-to-date! You will want to select the "SuperDat File (Engine + DAT)" option when updating your VirusScan engine. It is a good idea to do this on a regular basis if your installation of VirusScan does not do this automatically for you. (Some installations of McAfee will download updates any time you are connected to the Internet--contact the IT Solutions Center for more details.)
  • Windows XP Service Pack 3 -- Ensure that your version of Windows XP is up-to-date. Service Pack 3 includes numerous security improvements over Service Pack 1 and 2. If you are disconnected from the network by IT Security due to an infected system, you will not be allowed back onto the network until you have verified that your system is "clean" as well as fully patched.
